This red, white, and blue fruit salad is a colorful, festive, and fun treat. Featuring fresh berries, pineapple, and watermelon tossed in a simple honey-citrus dressing, it’s the perfect dish to bring to Memorial Day and 4th of July parties, spring and summer barbecues, or to snack on at home.

Raise your hand if you didn’t realize before becoming a parent just how much fresh fruit kids eat. Especially berries.

(You can’t see it, but I’m raising my hand right now.)

But if your kids are like mine, sometimes they struggle to branch out from just downing cartons of strawberries and raspberries. So one of my favorite tricks for introducing new fruits (or reminding them that other fruits exist) is to make a big fruit salad.

Bonus: They’re easy to theme for holidays based on the colors of the fruits you use.

This red, white, and blue fruit salad is a favorite in our house. It’s made with fresh fruit in hues of red, white, and blue and a super simple citrus-honey dressing. Aside from being delicious and quick to toss together, it’s perfect for taking to cookouts on Memorial Day weekend or July 4th.

You could even serve it for a summer holiday breakfast or brunch alongside a lox and bagel board or sourdough dutch baby.

Testing notes and tips

  • The fruit is delicious on its own, but a simple citrus-honey dressing really makes this fruit salad extra special. The dressing also serves to sweeten up any fruit that isn’t as ripe or flavorful as you’d like it to be.
  • You can use any fruits you like, but try to make sure they are all about the same size. This means you may need to halve or quarter larger strawberries so the salad is easier to eat.
  • Wait until just before serving to add the dressing. The acidity in the orange juice and the sugar in the honey will cause the fruit to start to break down, so toss everything together just before serving for the prettiest presentation.

The best fruits to use in a red, white, and blue fruit salad

Berries paired with watermelon and pineapple is my family’s favorite combination for this seasonal fruit salad, and these are the fruits I listed in the printable recipe card below. You get all of the patriotic colors and all of them are at their peak in summer.

But feel free to have fun with the fruits you use here. Just make sure they’re fresh; frozen fruit gets very soft after thawing, so fresh fruit is the way to go. The exception is frozen pineapple, which holds up pretty well even after thawing.

Some fruits you can use include:

  • Red: Strawberries, raspberries, cubed watermelon, red grapes, pitted sweet cherries, sliced red plums
  • White: Pineapple chunks, cubed honeydew melon, diced apples, diced pears, sliced bananas, sliced white peaches
  • Blue: Blueberries, blackberries, purple grapes

For the melon: Feel free to use a melon baller instead of cubing watermelon or honeydew.

Fruit salad dressing

An easy honey citrus dressing adds an extra layer of flavor and sweetness to this red, white, and blue fruit salad. You can skip it if you prefer, but I giving it a try!

I use equal parts orange juice and honey to make it. You can use fresh-squeezed orange juice, but bottled pulp-free juice works just as well.

I keep my salad lightly dressed, but you can easily double the dressing if you prefer a sweeter fruit salad or if you fruit isn’t as sweet as you’d like.

Try this: To elevate the flavors of the fruit salad even more, chiffonade fresh mint to add to the dressing.

Serving and presentation suggestions

When I’m making red, white, and blue fruit salad for a party or holiday brunch, I like to get creative with my presentation to make it feel extra special.

Instead of dicing the pineapple, try using a cookie cutter to cut stars from pineapple slices. If you can find carambola (aka star fruit) at your grocery store, cut it into slices for another cute and totally natural star option!

And since we’re already using fresh watermelon in the salad, you can hollow out the watermelon rind to use as a serving bowl. Use any extra watermelon to make my watermelon frosé or watermelon agua fresca.

Make-ahead tips

I don’t recommend tossing the fruit with the dressing until just before serving, but that doesn’t mean you can’t prep the components of the salad ahead of time.

If you’re making it a few hours ahead of time: Toss the fruit together in a bowl. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Separately, whisk together the dressing and refrigerate until it’s time to serve. Add the dressing to the fruit and serve.

To prep it up to a day head of time: Wash, dry, and (as needed) cut the fruits. Store the fruits in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. Combine the dressing and store in another airtight container in the fridge. Mix everything together just before serving.

Notes

Ingredients

  • Ideally, most of your fruit pieces will be similar sizes. If your strawberries are very large, you may need to halve or quarter them instead of leaving them whole.
  • If you’re serving this fruit salad at Memorial Day or July 4th barbecues, try using a cookie cutter to cut star shapes from slices of fresh pineapple for an extra patriotic touch.
  • Feel free to double the dressing if you prefer a sweeter fruit salad or if your fruit is not naturally as sweet as you’d like.

Make ahead

  • I recommend waiting until just before serving to add the dressing. If you need to make this fruit salad ahead of time:
    • Up to a few hours ahead: Mix together the fruit in a bowl. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Whisk together the dressing; chill in a separate airtight container. Just before serving, toss the dressing with the fruit.
    • Up to a day ahead: Wash, dry, and cut the fruit. Store the fruit in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. Whisk the dressing; store in an airtight container in the fridge. Just before serving, add the fruit and dressing to a large bowl and gently toss to combine.

Storing leftovers

  • Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Keep in mind that the fruit will break down and release more juice the longer it sits.
