This fall, I’m celebrating my 13th anniversary with the Queen City. I love how much there is do in Charlotte–whether it’s exploring a new park (among other toddler activities in Charlotte), going to brunch, catching a show, going to the farmers market, or sipping a beer on a brewery patio.

And come fall, nothing beats a day trip to the pumpkin patch! Farms in and around Charlotte turn into full-on playgrounds for kids and adults alike. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect pumpkin for your porch, or just want an excuse to wear flannel and drink some cider, the Charlotte area is packed with pumpkin patches!

Our favorite pumpkin patches in the Charlotte, NC area

Our family loves a good pumpkin patch. Letting the kids each pick out a pumpkin, enjoying a fresh cider donut, exploring corn mazes—what could be more fun in the fall?

I’ve made sure to take good notes at all of our pumpkin patch, wagon ride, and friendly farm visits over the past few years so I can authoritatively share a list of some of the best pumpkin patches in the Charlotte area (and one apple orchard!) just in time for the Fall season!

One farm—Hodge’s Family Farm—is right here in the Queen City (plus, the Charlotte Knights’ pumpkin patch is right in the heart of Uptown in early October for one day only!), while the rest of the farms are 30-60 minutes from Uptown Charlotte. Located less than an hour outside of Charlotte, Bush-N-Vine Farm has been in the Hall family for over 150 years. What started as a peach farm has grown into a massive farm stand that is open year-round, offering a wide variety of seasonal produce, a farm cafe, a CSA program, and more.

Bush-N-Vine has a number of pick-your-own crops throughout the spring and summer, but the pick-your-own pumpkin patch is the highlight of fall!

You do not need to make a reservation to pick pumpkins, but they do recommend coming in the morning or during the week if possible. Pumpkins are priced by the pound.

Wear sneakers or shoes you don’t mind getting dirty in case the pumpkin patch is muddy, and be sure to grab an apple cider donut at the farm cafe before you leave!

Carrigan Farms is a family-owned farm located about 40 minutes outside of Charlotte. They have been farming the same land for over 100 years and now offer farm visits—including apple picking and pumpkin picking—private events, a haunted trail, and swimming the quarry.

Pumpkin picking requires an advance reservation and spots fill up quickly, so book early! Cost is $15 per person for anyone ages 2 and up and includes a hayride to the pumpkin patch and petting zoo. 

Make sure to wear close-toed shoes or boots. You may also want to bring a pocket knife and/or gardening gloves to make picking your pumpkin a bit easier.

Carrigan Farms also has a farm store on site with mums and other fall decor for purchase, as well as a food truck with apple cider donuts and slushies!

The Charlotte Knights’ pumpkin patch is free and open for all ages, and a portion of each pumpkin purchase will directly benefit the Charlotte Knights Charities Foundation and its community partners. Pumpkins are first come, first serve. After you pick your perfect pumpkin in the outfield, stick around the ballpark for food, drinks and other activities, including pumpkin painting.

Hall Family Farm was established in 2008 and has been at their current location about an hour outside of Charlotte since 2021.

In the spring the farm offers a u-pick strawberry patch, and a play area featuring duck races, a fire truck slide, goat walk, and hayride are available year-round.

The fall is really special, though, with pumpkin picking, two corn mazes (including a 7-acre maze that includes a scavenger hunt), and hot apple cider.

There is no admission charge; pumpkins are priced by the pound and the corn mazes are priced per person. Make sure to plan time to grab an apple cider donut sundae from the bakery!

A rural haven in Charlotte, Hodges Family Farm offers a little something for everyone. From a farm shop complete with 100% grassfed beef and local honey to weddings and private events in the 1930s barn, this farm has got it all.

The annual pumpkin patch is the family’s favorite event, though. Every day during pumpkin season you can find pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, farm animals, and picnic areas. On weekends, you can also take hayrides around the farm.

There is no entry fee, but there is a parking fee of $5 per car on Saturdays and Sundays.

This family-owned farm has been a local favorite for years and is one of our kids’ favorite activities in Charlotte (a trip to The Hunter Farm is also popular with all of our out of town guests!). We make sure we book a reservation in advance for their wagon ride out to the petting barn (where your kiddos will get a cup to feed the goats, pigs, cows, and more), and then when we get back from visiting the animals, we play in the pumpkin patch before selecting a few to take home for our porch.

Beyond wagon rides and the pumpkin patch, The Hunter Farm is home to a market barn full of pumpkins, merch and locally made gifts. And on Fridays throughout the fall, they host Farm Fridays from 4-8pm with live music, drinks, food trucks and fun for the whole family.

Outlaw Acres is a Wild West fall adventure located 40 minutes from Charlotte. You can explore the corn maze, visit the animal barn, shop for pumpkins, and more, all in a Western-themed atmosphere complete with actors in period costumes.

Admission is $15 per person; children 3 and under enter for free. Admission fee includes the corn maze, Old West Town, animals, play areas, and live performances. Pumpkins, food, and the kids’ shooting range are extra.

An hour north of Charlotte, Patterson Farm is a great destination for hands-on family-fun farm activities.

If pumpkins are your goal, you can shop for their farm-grown pumpkins any time in the market. They also have some great photo ops in the pumpkin area! You don’t need to purchase an admission ticket to shop for pumpkins.

For a full morning or afternoon of family fun, consider one of their Fall Fun on the Farm passes. Explore the corn maze, take a wagon ride, enjoy the playground, play paintball, and more. Passes vary in price depending on included activities.

The Union Exchange is a farm and event space about 40 minutes from Charlotte that really does offer a little of everything. Enjoy live music, interact with farm animals, snack on a sandwich or smoothie, shop the artisan market, explore walking trails, and more!

The Union Exchange hosts a number of family friendly events throughout the year, including a Santa experience throughout the month of December. 

During the fall, enjoy a “not so spooky” wagon ride and visit to the pumpkin patch! Reservations are required for anyone ages 2 and up for the wagon ride—children under 2 ride free as a “lap child.”

Ok, ok, you got me: Windy Hill Orchard & Cidery, just under an hour outside Charlotte, is not a pumpkin patch at all. It’s an apple orchard! But it’s so perfect for fall fun that I had to include it here.

Bring the family to pick your own apples from the orchard or grab some from the farm stand. Adults can enjoy hard cider flights and tastings at the cider bar, while kids can enjoy fresh cider and sodas.

Don’t miss out on their apple cider donuts, kettle corn, and more.

You’ll need to make a reservation to pick your own apples. Reservations include a ¼-peck bag per person. There’s no reservation required if you just want to shop the farm stand or visit the cider bar.

Wise Acres Farm is a USDA-certified organic farm located 30 minutes southeast of Charlotte and one of the most popular fall experiences in the Charlotte area. The farm offers a variety of u-pick crops throughout the year, from strawberries in the spring to Christmas trees in late November.

In order to properly maintain the organic crops, the farm is accessible by reservation only. Reservations open anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks before the season opens, depending on how the crops are looking. 

Beyond pumpkin picking, kids can enjoy a corn pit, tractor pulled wagon rides, an outdoor natural playground, flower picking, and making new barnyard friends in the animal area. But the best part about a visit to Wise Acres is their wood-fired pizza (you have to order pizza in advance when you make your farm reservation).

Pumpkin season begins September 20 and reservations open on September 15.
