If there’s football on the TV, these baked jalapeño poppers are on the menu! This recipe features three cheeses and plenty of spices stuffed into halved fresh jalapeños. They’re then roasted in the oven instead of frying for a lighter, easier party or game-day appetizer. These easy jalapeño poppers take 30 minutes and can be prepped ahead of time.

Anyone who knows me knows that there are two things I really, really love:
- Food
- Football
And, of course, I love to eat food while watching football. My family takes our game-day appetizers very seriously. Whether it’s my aunt’s pepperoni bread, the perfect charcuterie board, or a batch of homemade jalapeño poppers, there’s something special on the menu each weekend during football season.
I’ve been making these baked jalapeño poppers for years. They have inspired variations like my , pimento cheese jalapeño poppers and even my jalapeño popper dip. But I keep coming back to the original recipe because you just can’t beat it.
Skip the fryer and roast these poppers in the oven for an easier, but still delicious, version. You can make them in just 30 minutes from start to finish or even prep them ahead of time before a big party!

Chrissie’s tips and tricks
- Forget frying. Roasting the stuffed jalapeños in the oven gives you just as much flavor without the mess of deep frying. For more crispiness on top, pop them under the broiler at the end of the baking time for just a few minutes!
- Look for similar-sized peppers. When your jalapeños are similar in size, it’ll help the poppers bake more evenly. Grab larger jalapeños if you can—they’re easier to work with and have more space for lots of cheesy filling.
- Be careful when handling the seeds and membranes. Make sure wash your hands thoroughly after handling the peppers. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to wear a pair of gloves while halving and de-seeding the peppers.
A note from the author
2026 update: I first shared this recipe almost 10 years ago as part of a project with my fellow bloggers to share our favorite game-day bites. I still make this easy jalapeño popper recipe regularly, but have updated the photos and post to include more tips for you readers. Enjoy!

Ingredient notes
For the full recipe, including ingredient amounts, scroll down to the printable recipe card below.
- Fresh jalapeños: These are the star of the show! As I mentioned above, look for larger peppers that are similar in size.
- Cream cheese: This gives us a rich, creamy, slightly tangy base for our filling. Set it out at room temperature to soften before you start cooking.
- Cheddar cheese: Sharp cheddar is best. Shred it yourself if you can for the smoothest melt!
- Feta cheese: This adds a salty bite that is just so good wth the tangy cream cheese and sharpness of the cheddar.
- Herbs and spices: A combination of garlic powder, onion powder, and fresh cilantro. If you don’t like cilantro, feel free to omit it or swap it for fresh parsley or even sliced green onions or chives.

Prepping the jalapeños
Wash and dry all of your jalapeño peppers. Using a sharp knife, cut each pepper in half lengthwise. Don’t cut off the top of the peppers—leaving that on each half will help keep the filling in so it doesn’t ooze out in the oven.
Use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and the membranes. This is where most of the heat lives in the peppers. If you like spicy food and want more spice in your jalapeño poppers, leave some of the seeds and don’t scoop out the ribs/membrane.
If peppers don’t want to lay well on the flat baking sheet and keep rolling around, trim a very small amount from the base to create more of flat surface. Make sure to just trim enough to help them not roll around, but don’t make a hole in the pepper!

Adding bacon to baked jalapeño poppers
While I love this jalapeño popper recipe as is, you can easily add bacon in a couple of ways:
- Add to the filling: Stir pre-cooked bacon bits or cooked and crumbled bacon into the filling before stuffing the peppers. This is the easiest way to go.
- Wrap the peppers: For even more bacon in every bite, wrap strips of uncooked bacon around the stuffed peppers, similar to making bacon-wrapped little smokies. For more tips on this process, check out my bacon-wrapped jalapeño popper mummies recipe.

Make-ahead tips
These jalapeño poppers can be made 1-2 days in advance. Prep and stuff the peppers, then transfer them to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator.
When you’re ready to bake them, place them on a lined baking sheet while the oven preheats, then roast according to the recipe directions.
Storage
Jalapeño poppers are one of those foods that are best enjoyed the same day they’re made. Because these are baked, they will reheat a bit better than fried ones, but they still won’t be quite the same.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat them briefly in an air fryer or toaster oven.

Roasted Jalapeño Poppers
Ingredients
- 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese shredded
- 4 ounces feta cheese
- 4 ounces cream cheese at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro chopped
- 12 jalapeño peppers halved, seeds and ribs removed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400℉. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, add the cheeses, spices, and cilantro. Mix with a spatula or wooden spoon until well combined.4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, 4 ounces feta cheese, 4 ounces cream cheese, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro

- Spread the cheese mixture into each pepper half. Do not overstuff the peppers or they will leak in the oven.12 jalapeño peppers

- Place the stuffed pepper halves on the prepared baking sheet, placing them close together to prevent them from rolling around while baking.

- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the peppers are tender and the cheese is bubbly.

- To brown the cheese, broil on high for 3-5 minutes. Keep a close eye on the peppers while broiling so they don't burn. Serve warm.
Notes
Prepping the peppers
- If you are sensitive to spice and heat, wear nitrile gloves when cutting and deseeding the peppers to protect your skin.
- If you like things spicy, you can leave the membranes in the jalapeños, as well as a few seeds; those are the source of the heat in the peppers. (We think this recipe is plenty spicy with the seeds and membranes removed, but you may want to kick it up a notch!)
- When halving the peppers and removing the seeds, try to keep the top of the peppers intact so that the filling stays inside during baking.

It’s crazy how we can watch football outside in warm winter weather. These poppers are a welcome snack with no greasy drips!
Looks great try wrapping them in bacon. Google ABTs
Perfect for football games. Love the addition of feta!

This recipe looks good but trying to locate the steps and ingredients is like reading a novel. I’d pin this recipe but I still don’t know how long to bake them or at what temperature!
All of that information is in the recipe card at the bottom of the post!
15-20 minutes at 400. And yes, it was very difficult to find!
I so agree! While I appreciate checking out other recipes offered AFTER I have accomplished what I am looking to find, this was crazy.
I scrolled both up and down many times, convinced I had missed the actual recipe. The over abundance of ads and superfluous info can be a turn off regardless of the quality of the recipe.
