Fun And Family Friendly Things To Do In Charlotte With Kids
As a Charlotte mom of two young kids, I’m constantly scouting out places where little ones can run, climb, explore, and burn off their endless energy (without totally draining the adults in the process). Off the Eaten Path’s guide to kid-friendly activities in Charlotte, NC is packed with tried-and-true kid friendly outings across the Queen City, from splash pads and playgrounds to hands-on museums, nature preserves, and farms— places where both kids and parents can have fun.

The Best Activities to Do with Kids in Charlotte NC
No matter the age, kids can be exhausting, and “kid stuff” isn’t always designed for the adults to have fun, too. And that makes kid activities even more exhausting. You feel me?

I’ve lived in Charlotte, North Carolina for almost fourteen years, but what once was a website about exploring a new-to-me city one bite at a time, we now have two kiddos of our own, so we’ve been in the business of testing all the kid corners of the Queen City (including places like farmers markets, restaurants and more!). Our two little ones are currently four and two, and we all have a deep appreciation for toddler activities that are fun, flexible, and don’t end in a meltdown (for them or me).
My kids are toddlers now (and you know I have a guide to the best toddler activities in Charlotte NC), but I know they won’t always be! So I’ve always kept my eye on the things the older kids are up to, wherever we go, pocketing that information for later (and to share with you!). Plus some of my friends have older kids, so it’s easy to keep my pulse on the things kids and teens are loving in our city.
If you’re a fellow parent, grandparent, caregiver, or just someone Googling “things to do with kids in Charlotte before I lose my mind,” this post is for you. Whether you’re a local or just visiting the Queen City with kids of all ages, I’ve rounded up the top spots that kids will love and bigger kids won’t outgrow — fun, easy adventures the whole family can enjoy.

BIG ROCK NATURE PRESERVE
6500 Elmstone Dr, Charlotte, NC 28277
Recommended ages: Toddlers, Preschoolers, School Aged
Big Rock Nature Preserve is a natural hidden gem tucked among the hustle and bustle of South Charlotte near Stonecrest at Piper Glen. The preserve protects the Big Rock Rock Shelter, home to the largest exposed boulders in Mecklenburg County and an important archaeological site used by Native American communities as early as 7,000 years ago. Easy walking trails wind through the 22-acre preserve, with interpretive signs explaining the site’s geological and historical significance—making it a quick, low-effort, adventurous outing.

THE BOWL AT BALLANTYNE
15119 Bowl Street, Charlotte, NC 28277
Pictured above are my little ones and I exploring The Bowl at Ballantyne, which is on the newer side (opened in 2024). We love the Stream Park with its Hillside slides, hammocks, and other fun playground equipment. We also adore that the park is walkable distance to kid-friendly food like Harriet’s Hamburgers and Honeysuckle Gelato. (Pro tip: grab a pre-playground iced latte at Fly Kid Fly.)
We love that the bowl is kid- and dog-friendly. All of the restaurants have great patios for wiggly kids to run around, and kid-friendly menus too. There are even more spots scheduled to open in the next year, so there is plenty to check out every time you visit. Although the Bowl now required paid parking, it’s free to park for 2 hours in the surface lots or parking garages, which is honestly the perfect amount of time for a quick bite and playground hang.
For bigger kids who like to dress up, it might be fun to enjoy afternoon tea at the Ballantyne Hotel. The holiday tea especially is fun for kids and adults alike. But beware: You’ll need a reservation.
BOWLING
Recommend Ages: All Ages!
Bowling is an activity for the whole family, and Bowlero on South Boulevard is our go-to spot in Charlotte (fun fact, my husband, AJ, has several bowling medals so we love bowling). With bumpers, lightweight balls, ramps, and kid-friendly lanes, even first-time bowlers can jump right in without frustration, while older kids love the lights, music, and built-in screens that keep things feeling fun and modern. Add in arcade games, easy food options, and a casual atmosphere, bowling is perfect for rainy days, birthdays, or a low pressure family outing.
CAMP NORTH END
300 Camp Road, Charlotte NC 28206
Recommended Ages: All Ages!
The industrial creative space at Camp North End caters to people of all ages and is super family friendly.
We love to spend a weekend morning at Camp: listening to live music (bonus if it’s my kids’ favorite band, the Jolly Lollies), building with life size legos on the lawn, and popping into a family story time at That’s Novel Books or participating in a free art workshop with the Broken Crayon (they offer free workshops every other month featuring art activities like planter painting and tote bag tie dye, which you have to register for in advance.)
Before heading home, we grab lunch at one of the food stalls or other restaurants, and do a little shopping (our three year old loves books so we shop around That’s Novel Books and I love plants so there is a must stop at Grow too).
Camp North End also has fun seasonal events like the North End Farmers Market in the spring and summer, the Mistletoe Market and Ice Skating in the winter, and Crossroads Cinema (outdoor movies) in the summer.
