Add water to a small saucepan and place over medium-high heat. Once the water is warm, add the sugar and stir or whisk until the sugar is dissolved. The water does not have to come to a boil, it just needs to be warm enough to dissolve the sugar.
1 cup water, 1 cup granulated sugar
Once the sugar is dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool. Transfer the syrup to a glass bottle, mason jar or other clean, airtight container and store in the fridge up to 1 month.
Notes
Method
If you prefer, you can add the sugar to the water right away instead of warming the water by itself first. It will just take a little longer for the mixture to heat.
Variations
Make a rich simple syrup by doubling the sugar for a 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio. Rich simple syrup can be kept in the refrigerator for 3-6 months.
The granulated sugar can be swapped for other sugars, such as brown sugar, honey, demerara sugar, etc.
Yield
1 cup of water with 1 cup of sugar makes about 12 ounces (1 1/2 cups) simple syrup.
