orange beet tropical smoothie

This orange, beet tropical smoothie will have you dreaming of sunshine and summertime, no matter the season! This post is sponsored by Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice. All opinions are my own.

AJ got me a new DSLR camera for Christmas (!!!) and it’s been sitting in our room in it’s box since I unwrapped it in December (basically making me the worst gift receiver in history).

One would think that I didn’t like the gift. False! I LOVED it. I asked for it; a nice, digital camera is something I’ve been toying with buying for myself for a while, for things like trips, life, and to maybe up my photo game from just my iPhone camera on this very blog. But my camera sat and sat and sat upstairs because I didn’t know how to use it. Right after Christmas, I read some things about my new camera on the Internet and still wasn’t quite sure what I was doing. So instead of playing around with it, I kept it nice and safe in it’s box.

Well, this week I dusted it off, broke it out of it’s box, and had so much fun learning how to use it and playing around with manual settings at a SkillPop class here in Charlotte. SkillPop was the perfect environment (and excuse) for me to start learning about my camera and its manual settings; it was a small, two hour, in person, hands on class taught by a local photographer, where we spent the first half learning about our cameras, photography, the exposure triangle, and more (all while taking diligent notes, of course!) and the second half wandering around Third Ward practicing what we had talked about. It was awesome and the perfect way to start learning more about photography for a visual, hands on learner like me. In person learning is way better than just reading some things on the Internet. I loved Katherine’s approach to teaching; she was super knowledgable, straightforward and easy to follow, and I like that she was right there when we started practicing to give feedback and ask questions. If you haven’t heard of SkillPop, or haven’t had the chance to take a class yet, I highly encourage you to check it out and take a class. Right now, their offering about four pop up classes a week at places all over Charlotte, covering topics from beer and budgeting, to raising chickens, photography, blogging, and hand lettering (which sells out in like 20 minutes every time a new class is announced!). SkillPop the perfect excuse, and price, to learn about a new topic or hone a new skill.*

So what does a pop up photography class have to do with an orange beet tropical smoothie, you ask? Not a lot, but do my new photography skills make this smoothie look super delicious?

The good news about this orange beet tropical smoothie is that it not only looks delicious, it tastes delicious too. I started with Natalie’s Orchid Island Orange Beet Juice, which was practically begging to be blended with some fruit for a sunny, springtime treat (the addition of beets to this juice gives it such a pretty color and an extra layer of sweetness). I love Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice company for a few reasons: they have a wide variety of squeezed fresh juices (everything from classic orange and orange beet, mango and pineapple, to strawberry lemonade, lemonade tea, tomato, even margarita mix and sour mix for cocktails!), that are made with locally sourced Florida citrus and other produce; their focus is on fresh fruit and they aren’t hiding any chemicals or preservatives in their juices;  their a woman owned company (girl power!) and family run company; and you can now get their juices at Publix in North Carolina.

My other inspiration for this smoothie came from our trip to the farmers market yesterday…they cost us a pretty penny but the first South Carolina strawberries of the season debuted at the market yesterday. I bought us a whole bucket for strawberry snacking and smoothie making.

With a little extra citrus and some tropical flavors** (I’m working with juice from Florida, after all!) I blended up a Sunday sipper that has me craving sunshine and summer!

*SkillPop didn’t sponsor any of this content, I just like it that much!

*I like to combine fresh and frozen fruit in my smoothies to get a cool, creamy consistency without adding ice!

    1. Don’t feel bad about taking a while to use your camera…I bought mine in 2011 and just started to use it consistently. Your pictures are soo pretty and that smoothie looks yummy. Can’t wait to try the recipe out.

    2. Strawberries look yummy Chrissie!! I wanted to take the blogging class this week with SkillPop but of course it sold out once I was ready to sign up *sigh* I’ll know better next.

    3. This smoothie sounds delicuous. We have a Publix right around the corner to pick up all the ingredients. Have you tried the Harris Teeter pizza? They make it in-store.
